Volunteer Opportunities

If you are interested in any of these opportunities, please contact us at museums@platteville.org or (608) 348-3301.

Tour Guides

Volunteer guides help lead tours and educational activities for K-12 schools and youth groups, primarily in the Rollo Jamison Museum exhibits.

Special Events

Volunteers at special events greet and count visitors, play traditional games with families, and any number of other things.  If you like to work with people this job is for you!

It is a lot of work to maintain two historic schools and a mine from 1845!  Maintenance volunteers help keep everything in working order, doing everything from painting to general maintenance and special cleaning projects.

Grounds & Gardens

These volunteers help mow and trim our lawn, take care of our trees, and care for the flower beds.

Curatorial Volunteer

Curatorial volunteers work directly with the objects in our collection, helping with cataloging, data entry, photography, and other projects.

Toy Train Exhibit

These volunteers set up the toy train exhibits each February.  Expertise is not necessary, but those willing to lift heavy platforms and crawl underneath to adjust wiring are encouraged to apply.

Volunteer Leadership Opportunities

Friends of the Mining & Rollo Jamison Museums Board

The nonprofit friends group that supports your museums, formerly known as the Jamison Museum Association, will be doing business as the Friends of the Mining and Rollo Jamison Museums as of January 1, 2017. The members voted to change the name of the organization at their Annual Meeting in November in order to more accurately represent their current activities and mission.

Friends Board members lead the 501(c)3 nonprofit that organized in the 1980s to support the Rollo Jamison Museum through fundraising and volunteerism.  Today they are active in exhibit development, assist with special events, and work in a wide range of activities.

Museum Board

A board committee of the City of Platteville, the Museum Board sets policies for all aspects of the Mining and Rollo Jamison Museums relating to maintenance, staffing, public utility, and the disbursements of monies belonging to the Museum Fund.

Ad Hoc Committees

Periodically staff, the Museum Board, and the Friends Board put together ad hoc committees that include community volunteers to work on special projects such as fundraising, special events, and new initiatives.
