Norwegian-American tree

Christmas trees were not common in Norway for most of the 19th century. However, Norwegians in America adopted the idea adding their own distinctive touch with flags, heart baskets, and straw ornaments, symbols from their homeland.

Small trees decorated with cookies, nuts, fruit and candy along with candles and a few homemade ornaments was traditional for many Germans. There might also be a few gifts for the family hanging on the tree.

Before England adopted the Christmas tree, greenery was arranged into the Christmas bush or the kissing bush.

American trees might include imported, store bought decorations with imported ornaments, but homemade ornaments, gifts, candy, nuts and fruits provided most of the decorations.
